On Sunday, Meryl Streep reminded the world why people shouldn’t care about what Hollywood actors think about politics.
She used her lifetime achievement award acceptance speech as an opportunity to bash our next president.
Not only did she repeat the tired and debunked lie that Trump mocked a reporter’s disability, but she also took a totally unnecessary shot at MMA and football fans.
From Fox Business:
“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” Streep said. “If we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
That had nothing to do with Trump or the Golden Globes.
Just an unnecessary jab at Americans who enjoy those two things.
As you can imagine, some MMA fighters didn’t take kindly to that.
From Heat Street:
UFC Host Megan Olivi wrote: “Really weird to see someone talk about not discriminating then basically discriminate against an entire group of skilled, hard working ppl.”
Martial Arts promoter Scott Coker went even further and penned an open letter to the actress, saying:
I’m a lifelong fan of your work but also a lifelong martial artist who happens to promote mixed martial arts around the world.
The global sport of mixed martial art celebrates males and female athletes from around the world who work years tirelessly honing their crafts and – yes – arts. They come from every country and every walk of life. We at Bellator support them and honor their skill.
Please be my guest at the LA forum on January 21st and you will see that Mixed Martial Arts is truly artistic – which will feature fighters from all over the world competing at a world class level.”
In a letter posted on his official Facebook page, UFC champion Josh Barnett also took issue with Streep’s remarks, joking that, to everyone’s misfortune, her nose was “so high in the air” her glasses would never fall from it and stop her from reading her pompous speeches:
“While it [Mixed Martial Arts] may not have the civil, often upper class air to it that your art does, it is not devoid of talent, skill, training or schooling,” he said.
“Stay classy” he added.
UFC President Dana White had some words for Meryl too….
Her statement just made no sense.
First of all, MMA fighters and football players are a diverse group of people.
Second of all, MMA and football fans are very diverse.
Clearly, she had no idea what she was talking about and has never associated herself with people who like those things.
Basically, she admitted has never associated with people outside of her bubble.
Sorry Meryl but this is what happens when you talk to Americans like they are peasants.
Hollywood is out of touch and clearly they think that anyone who doesn’t agree with their politics is less important than them.
They are wrong.
