Tuesday night, Buzzfeed dropped a salacious story with completely unverified claims supposedly showing information that Russia had against President-elect Donald Trump.
Although Buzzfeed admitted in the own piece that they have not been able to verify the information, they published it anyway, noting, “This is journalism, 2017.”
They even say there are serious reasons to doubt the allegations.
From NY Post:
Yet Buzzfeed went with the unverified report anyway.
The alleged dossier of information has been bouncing around since the summer.
Most media had decided not to touch it, as they hadn’t been able to verify any of the information.
Even the NY Times, which has often been thought to be a vehicle for Hillary Clinton, refused to run with the information. They criticized Buzzfeed’s publication of the information, saying they would not have published it.
“We, like others, investigated the allegations and haven’t corroborated them, and we felt we’re not in the business of publishing things we can’t stand by,” Baquet said in TheNYT. The allegations Buzzfeed reported were “totally unsubstantiated,” he added.
The Daily Caller is reporting that an opposition researcher paid by both Republicans and Democrats during the campaign to find dirt on Trump composed the dossier
According to the NY Post, intelligence agencies informed President-elect Donald Trump and President Obama of the dossier of information, but did not confirm any of it. One official speculated that the intelligence community may have leaked the information to get back at Trump for criticism.
Trump ripped the unverified report, tweeting out “FAKE NEWS — A TOTAL POLITICAL WITCH HUNT!”
