There are a lot of things that one might say about the shocking Chicago case where four black youths held a young white special needs man against his will while they tortured him.
But one thing is for sure. It is most definitely evil.
CNN commentator Don Lemon didn’t seem to think so. The critical part of the video is around 3:37.
A commentator calls it ‘evil’ and ‘man’s inhumanity to man’.
Don Lemon responds:
“I don’t think it’s evil. I don’t think it’s evil. I think these are young people and they have bad home training. I think that- when we say who is raising these people, we have no idea who is raising these young people.”
He seems to contradict himself by then also referring to it as inhumane.
In some sense, he is correct, because one does wonder who would raise evil people like this.
But it isn’t an excuse to diminish their responsibility or pawn it off on an ‘oh they’re just kids’ argument.
The police appeared to be similarly downplaying the responsibility of the ‘kids’, referring to the comments the attackers used as ‘just stupidity’ and ‘kids making stupid decisions’.
Treating people who are 18 as ‘kids’ is something of a ‘soft racism’ in and of itself.
18 is a legal adult, responsible for one’s own actions.
