About one week ago, the state of Ohio passed the Heartbeat Bill which would’ve banned abortions once a heartbeat was detected.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio would have the country’s most restrictive abortion laws under a bill sent to Gov. John Kasich on Tuesday, as leading Republicans were emboldened by the anticipation of Donald Trump’s upcoming federal and Supreme court appointments.

If signed by Kasich, the so-called “heartbeat bill” would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can be as early as six weeks’ gestation. The proposal would not exempt pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, but does include an exception for an abortion to save the life of the pregnant woman.

The change would put the state in violation of current constitutional standards for abortion rights.

For years, Kasich, leading Republican senators and Ohio Right to Life have cited its unconstitutionality as their reason for opposing the heartbeat measure. Federal courts have struck down similar laws in North Dakota and Arkansas.

Senate President Keith Faber, a Republican from Celina, Ohio, even suggested last year that supporters of the heartbeat bill ultimately were undermining efforts “to save babies.”

Today, 2016 presidential candidate and Ohio Gov. John Kasich vetoed the bill, but signed one banning abortions after 20-weeks.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich today vetoed the Heartbeat Bill forbidding abortions when a fetal heartbeat can be detected while signing into law a second bill banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The second-term Republican previously had expressed concerns about the constitutionality of the Heartbeat Bill, which would have been the most restrictive abortion law in the nation.

Federal courts struck down identical measures in two states in finding it was an undue state restriction on a woman’s right to an abortion at a point when some women do not realize they are pregnant.

It’s not a secret that Kasich is a moderate Republican, but signing the Heartbeat Bill seemed like a no-brainer.

Apparently, an unborn baby has up to 20 full weeks to develop before the mother decides she doesn’t want to keep it anymore.

Shame, Kasich.
