In this video, Rep. Trey Gowdy grills FBI Director James Comey to get him to say, “Yes, leaking classified information to the media is illegal” which was what was done here. Comey admits, yes, it is illegal.
The focus of media has been largely on the question of collusion, not on the illegality of the leaks and the dangers that that poses.
Gowdy is trying to focus attention on it and the problem of the intelligence community disregarding the law to undermine President Donald Trump.
But notice how Gowdy makes another important point. He talks about the extensive nature of the conversations that were covered.
What does that mean? The implication is that it wasn’t simply that the “U.S. citizen” (presumably Michael Flynn) was just accidentally caught in a dragnet meant for Russians, that indeed he was the focus of the collection.
But if that were true, then where is the warrant that would be required to surveil him? If there was none, that of course would be illegal.
Didn’t Comey just this morning say he was unaware of any warrants relating to Trump/aides?
Sounds like Gowdy is laying a foundation, getting Comey on the record to later nail this very point…
