As if she wasn’t already, Ivanka Trump is now the most powerful First Daughter in history.
According to the New York Post, “Cementing her role as a powerful White House influence, Ivanka Trump is working out of a West Wing office and will get access to classified information, though she is not technically serving as a government employee, according to an attorney for the first daughter.”
Although Ivanka will not have a title, she will have “a West Wing office, government-issued communications devices and security clearance to access classified information.”
Furthermore, Ivanka’s husband, Jared Kushner, is already a senior advisor to the president.
As is commonly pointed out, it is “unprecedented” for a child of a president to have so much sway over the White House while the father is still president. Obviously John Q. Adams and George W. Bush went on to pack a lot of sway over the White House themselves, but that was when they followed their father’s footsteps to become presidents themselves. Ivanka has not done that…yet.
Many are concerned by Jared and Ivanka’s role as a DC Unelected Power Couple, as both maintain substantial business interests.
The first daughter has sought to distance herself from the Trump Organization and her lifestyle brand, which offers shoes, clothing and jewelry. She has removed herself from executive roles and will have a more hands-off approach to the brand — though she will still get certain information and will have the power to veto new deals if they raise ethical red flags.
Nonetheless, the primary factor in Ivanka’s role may be that being “without an official title” means that is not required to disclose financial information to the degree a role with an official title would require.
And we all know how the Trumps feel about making full disclosures about their financial information.
