On Wednesday, President Donald Trump took a stand on behalf of the suffering people of Venezuela.
He called for the release of center-right opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez, who has been jailed for his criticism of the socialist government since February 2014. In September 2015, he was found guilty of public incitement to violence through supposed subliminal messages, criminal association. He was sentenced to 13 years and 9 months in prison.
Trump met with Lopez’s wife and with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who has been championing Lopez’s cause. Trump tweeted out the call for Lopez’s release after the meeting.
The President’s tweet was hailed by many.
Even journalist Jamie Weinstein, who has been a frequent critic of President Trump, called it “the best tweet of Trump’s presidency.”
For many suffering in Venezuela, Lopez is a champion.
So Venezuelans hopeful for change are encouraged that he may be released and that change may come to Venezuela with more attention from the United States.
