When Esteban Santiago shot up the baggage claim area at the Ft. Lauderdale airport on Friday, some people dropped to the ground, some hid, some fled.
This man’s reaction was terrific.
From NY Post:
Retired Electrician Tony Barosiewics threw himself on top of Annika Dean, whispering “I will protect you,” as bullets whizzed by, Dean told local Florida paper The Sun Sentinel.
Neither Bartosiewicz nor Dean were hit.
“He shielded me. He basically climbed on top of me and whispered, ‘I will protect you,’” the Broward County art teacher said of her savoir. “I knew he might be a victim, but I also knew I would survive.”
Annika Dean has two children, aged 13 and 11.
It was of them she was thinking as the shooting began.
She prayed to God to save her. It was then that Tony Barosiewics appeared and covered her, protecting her from the gunfire.
His daughter, Jenny Miller described her 70-year-old father as always selfless.
“That’s the kind of person he is,” Miller said.
The shooter, Esteban Santiago, faces federal and state charges.
He could face the death penalty.
5 people were killed and 6 wounded in the attack.
Police are investigating and have not ruled out terrorism.
Santiago told FBI in November that he was being forced to fight for ISIS and was put in a mental hospital for evaluation, but was released.
