Sen. Joe Manchin, Democrat from West Virginia, came to the defense of his former senate colleague, Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
During an interview with Alisyn Camarota, Manchin said it was normal to meet with ambassadors from other countries, such as the Russian ambassador, and that there was nothing unusual about that in the course of of a senator’s job.
Sessions has been under fire for meeting with the Russian ambassador last year but saying during his senate confirmation hearing that he had not met with the Russians. He was asked a question about meeting with Russian officials about the campaign and he responded that he had not met with them, meaning about campaign.
From Daily Caller:
“Have you met with the Russian Ambassador?” Camerota asked Manchin.
“I have,” he responded. “I’ve met with the Russian Ambassador with a group, in my capacity, with a group of other senators,” he explained. “That’s in my official capacity. That’s nothing. That’s my job.”
Good for Joe Manchin!
We already heard from Sen. Ted Cruz, who called it a ‘nothing burger’ but it’s good to hear from a Democrat that this was not an unusual practice.
This is getting a little silly.
Every Senator meets with ambassadors, there is nothing whatever to suggest that Sessions did anything improper or even unusual.
But Democrats want to keep up the drumbeat of the ‘Russian connection’ to continue to wreak chaos on the Trump team.
So thanks to Manchin for injecting a little more truth into the story.
