President Barack Obama bragged in his second term that he had a “pen and a phone” so that meant he could do whatever he wanted as president. But now, all of a sudden, the most authoritarian president in American history is worried about “authoritarianism” in the White House.
When Obama came to office in 2009, he insisted he would “roll back” the “executive overreach” he claimed was perpetrated by President George W. Bush. But after one term marred by a massive wave of oppressive regulations, he began is second term insisting that he had “a pen and a phone” which gives him the freedom to do whatever the heck he wanted to do as president.
The result: Obama spent eight years exercising more executive authority than any president in U.S. history.
When all was said and done, Obama issued more consequential executive orders and presidential memoranda than other president. But despite that authoritarian record, Obama is now out there insisting that American’s should reject overreaching presidential power.
“In periods like this, people looking for control and certainty — it’s inevitable,” Obama told the Canadian audience in a thinly-veiled warning about President Donald Trump. “But it is important to remember that the world has gone through similar moments … Our history also shows there is a better way.”
Then Obama wagged his slender finger and lectured his audience on the need to ignore the “call for isolation and nationalism,” or anyone who “suggests rolling back the rights of others,” DC said.
But DC also reminds its readers that Obama’s sudden squeamishness about presidential power is in marked contrast to his own days in office.
In 2014 Obama was more bellicose about his privilege.
“We’re not just going to be waiting for legislation,” Obama announced in January 2014. “I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone…and I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions and administrative actions.”
And remember what Obama did in office? He signed hundreds of executive orders that put nearly every corner of the people’s lives under his thumb. And that isn’t to even mention the constant wars he involved us in without consulting Congress. Oh, and need we forget that he lied outright to us on how videos started terror attacks, that there were no federal gunrunning programs, and that we could “keep our doctors if we like them.”
Fortunately, today we have a president who understands how un-American and destructive the Obama style for presidents is.
Trump has made major moves to roll back Obama’s oppressive and destructive regulations.
Rush Limbaugh recently pointed out just how successful Trump has been in rolling back Obama’s outrageous regulatory regime.
“[Trump] has cut the output of costly regulations so deeply that a group that charts the federal government’s output of rules has called the shift ‘historic,'” Rush said on Wednesday. “American Action Forum told Secrets that Trump has cut the output of regulations to just 8 percent of the averages under former President Obama and other recent administrations. What’s more, the cost of the new regulations has dropped from an average of $26 billion to $33 million.”
Now THAT is a president we can be proud of.
